5 TIPS FOR WORKING WITH PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

-

1 KNOW THE ADVANTAGES

Research shows people with disabilities take fewer days off, take less sick leave and stay in jobs for longer than other workers. They also have fewer accidents and compensation incidents.

2 MAKE WORK ACCESSIBLE

Ensure the physical work space is accessible for people of all abilities. This may include wheelchair-friendly bathrooms, car parks and desks, and adding braille to signage.

3 DO NOT DISCRIMINATE

It is illegal to disadvantage an employee or jobseeker because of their disability. Understand your rights and responsibilities via the Australian Human Rights Commission website humanrights.gov.au

4 DO NOT ASSUME

Some people wrongly assume people with a disability cannot handle the same workload as another. Focus on skills, experience and unique perspective they bring to the team.

5 RECOGNISE

December 3 is International Day of People with Disability, celebrating the achievements of people with a disability and aims to raise awareness and acceptance of all people.
