Sugar crush ends
MORE than 30 million tonnes sugar cane has been harvested across Queensland during the 2018 crush. All of the state’s 21 sugar mills have wound up for the season except one. Dry conditions for most of the year and particularly through winter have resulted in a reduction to the initial crop estimate, however commercial sugar content (CCS) had increased, Australian Sugar Milling Council’s Jim Crane said. The near-term low sugar price outlook for the industry will place greater emphasis in coming months on ensuring that maintenance expenditure is focused on the most critical elements of the factories and cane transport networks to help improve farmers’ bottom lines.
