DANCE LIKE NO ONE IS WATCHING

-

WANT to get your boogie on but are just a teeny bit self conscious? Don’t do Lycra and hate the bright lights? Then Dancing in the Dark may be just the ticket. Every Thursday at 6.30pm, the nocturnal hip shakers gather at Aeroglen Community Hall without fear of judgment. Dancing in the Dark has no dress code, no lights and no steps. “It’s all about having fun, letting go of tension, moving the body and just enjoying the moment,” says event facilitator, Dance Alchemy’s Deb Davie. “Come alone or come with friends; just come with the intent to have fun and dance like no one is watching, because no one will be. You will be a silhouette in the fairy lights.” It is open to ages from late teens to the over-55s.

Ms Davie said dancing was like “a super-battery for your brain.” She said studies showed dance integrated “kinesthetic, rational, musical, and emotional brain functions all at once, which increases neural connectivity and helps protect against dementia.“When you move your body differently it unlocks the brain to release tension and emotional blockages,” Ms Davie said. “Dancing is the fastest way to make yourself happy.” The no-lights, no-Lycra movement has spread globally since the first event was held in Melbourne back in 2009.
