Marlin five to swim against best in state

-

ROWAN SPARKES FIVE Marlin Coast Swimming Club athletes will spend the next week in Brisbane as they compete for state championship gold.

Swimmers Lenny Williams, Will Layton, Marcus West, Jasmine Olds and Enna Thorpe will represent the Marlin Coast at the 2018 McDonald’s Queensland Championships, which start today at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre.

Marlin Coast Swimming Club secretary Janelle West said she admired the commitment and dedication of the club’s state swimmer quintet.

“Swimming is something that you really need to train properly in, because of the techniques involved,” she said.

“And the kids have been training hard all year.”

Between them, the five swimmers will contest more than 25 events across the week-long competition.

“It seems quite full-on, but it’s actually really achievable,” West said.

“There might be a couple of days where they might have two races, but the coaches are very good with managing warm-ups and timing everything really well.”

Marlin Coast Swimming Club will be joined by other local swimmers from Cairns Stringrays, Saints, TAS and Central Cairns swimming clubs at the championships.
