HOUSES and businesses across the Far North are shining brightly with Christmas spirit.

From big light displays to inflatable figurines in the front yard and on the roof, countless families have gone above and beyond to spread some cheer.

For Bayview Heights couple Alan and Andrea Attree, setting up a lights display at their home has become an annual tradition for the past six years.

“Alan and I, along with our two children, enjoy displaying every year and can’t see us stopping anytime soon,” she said. “Yes, the weather gets us down and it can be disheartening, but letting down the public is heart-wrenching.”

Passionate about sharing her love for the festive season with others, Mrs Attree has launched the Facebook page, Christmas Lights Around Cairns, to showcase the countless houses across Cairns with light displays.

This year, more than 150 addresses are registered on her list.

“I think from having a display ourselves, the gift of being able to share our lights and see the happiness on people’s faces, not just the little ones, but of all ages, that’s really something special,” she said.

“Each year is different; some properties display each and every year, some are new to the list.

“I love the lights, the people involved on the list, their passion and drive.

“Together, with our combined spirit and love for lights, we are able to share a different aspect of Christmas.”

Councils across the Far North have also got into the Christmas spirit, with several running Christmas light competitions.

Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Joe Paronella said he was delighted with the number and quality of entries this year.

“It’s fantastic to see so many people getting into the festive spirit and taking the time to decorate their homes and businesses,” he said.
