Mareeba chases race date

- JORDAN GERRANS

MAREEBA Turf Club are looking to host a replacement race meeting on February 2 after a scheduled five race nonTAB card was washed out for the second time this week.

The race meeting set for this afternoon was originally postponed from Boxing Day due to the wet weather, with more rain recorded since then.

The Mareeba racetrack has recorded about 115mm of rainfall this week making the track unsuitable for racing following Queensland Racing Integrity Commission stewards inspecting the track yesterday afternoon around 2pm.

Racing Queensland yesterday said they will liaise with the club to determine if a suitable replacement date is available in the remainder of the 2018/19 racing season.

Mareeba club president Cyril Vains (pictured above) is aiming to reschedule the meetingfor the first Saturday of February.

“I was optimistic that we would be able to race as we had good weather for much of Thursday but the track had not dried up as much as we would have liked,” Vains said.

“The condition of the track was not safe enough to race.

“We will continue to speak with Racing Queensland and hopefully we can organise a replacement date early next year.”

Meanwhile, Tablelands hoop Wanderson D’Avila takes three rides at Rockhampton Jockey Club this afternoon.
