Beach fury at loss of trees

-

Beach residents are furious about the trees being targeted and had erected banners in the area reading: “Who killed the beach almonds?”

The banners have since been taken down.

Division 9 Councillor Brett Olds said the incident was one of several across the northern beaches in recent months.

He suggested the council follow the example set by other local governments by erecting large billboards in areas where vegetation had been illegally cleared to shame culprits.

“We should put up a huge billboard out the front there, with nothing written on it – just a black screen, saying ‘this billboard will remain until the new trees get to the same height as this billboard’,” he said. “I reckon we need to do something like that to stop people who keep doing things like this. We’ve had incidents in Clifton Beach as well.

“We need to teach these people a lesson and have a heavy hand.”

Trinity Beach residents David and Jean Morgan were disgusted by the poisonings.

“These trees would have helped prevent erosion,” Mr Morgan said.

“It’s just not right. People shouldn’t have done this.”
