Slater set to ride in big event
INNISFAIL rugby league legend Billy Slater took one look at Argentinian polo superstar Nacho Figueras yesterday and said “I hope he is on my team”.
The retired Melbourne Storm star will make his polo debut at the Pacific Fair Magic Millions Polo on the Gold Coast tomorrow.
“I have had some lessons but manoeuvring the horse and hitting the ball at speed is pretty tricky,” said Slater, who will be joined by wife Nicole on the field.
Slater and his wife met at pony club as teenagers and are comfortable in the saddle but taking to the field alongside some of the best riders in the world is a daunting prospect.
The couple will play in a match against some of Australia’s best jockeys. Nacho Figueras and his international model wife, Delfina Blaquier, will take the field to play against the Queen’s granddaughter, Zara Tindall.
