Dancers invited to take their first steps

A NEW dance studio will make its first moves in Cairns today.

The business called Urban Arts Centre is breaking into the Cairns dance lesson market by offering a diverse range of genres to students from as young as three.

Dance principal Alesha Epong said the studio would employ three other teachers whose speciality was ballet, hip-hop and breakdance. She will teach all other styles.

“We have got really good connections already with Graham Academy of Dance in Innisfail, who have been super supportive, and quite a few studios in Cairns too that have been very good about it,” Ms Epong said.

The first lesson at the 185 Scott Street studio will be a dance workshop featuring Emily-Maree Brozier from Turning Pointe Dance Studios.

“It’s open to all dancers, which is the perfect way to start the studio, just knowing that it’s an open door, no matter where you come from or who you are, there is something for everyone there,” she said.

“You don’t have to commit wholeheartedly to our studio but you are always welcome to come and do a class.”

Ms Epong said it was “really important” to employ young and passionate teachers who could assist her in delivering a comprehensive and wellrounded dance syllabus to students.

A meet-and-greet will be held at the Urban Arts Centre today from 9am-1pm.
