Seals culled to save fish

ORE­GON wildlife of­fi­cials have started killing Cal­i­for­nia sea lions that threaten a frag­ile type of trout in the Wil­lamette River, a body of wa­ter that’s miles in­land from coastal ar­eas where the car­niv­o­rous aquatic mam­mals usu­ally con­gre­gate.

The state De­part­ment of Fish and Wildlife ob­tained a per­mit to kill up to 93 sea lions an­nu­ally be­low Wil­lamette Falls south of Port­land to pro­tect the win­ter run of rain­bow trout that be­come steel­head when they travel to the ocean. Wildlife man­agers have killed three of the an­i­mals us­ing traps then lethal in­jec­tion.
