Garcia ‘can get us over the line’

- JORDAN GERRANS GRIDIRON

CAIRNS Falcons captain Owen Rodgers understands new coach Jim Garcia is not everyone’s cup of tea but believes he is on the way to getting the best out of the playing group.

The Far North-based Falcons are 0-3 in the 2018-19 north Queensland gridiron series and travel to Mackay today to try and break through for their maiden triumph of the campaign.

The Falcons playing group is relatively fresh and so is Garcia, who took over in the offseason.

Running back Rodgers described Garcia as an “oldschool” coach that brings a hard-nosed, no nonsense, workman-like attitude to the team.

“It shows in not only the players but the culture he and the rest of the boys are building at the club,” Rodgers said.

“He’s a massive clubman and Cairns football old boy that is just out here busting his back side to build back up, with minimal resources, a minority sports club in a town saturated with other sports, and we all love him for it.”

Garcia is impressed with the way his squad has come back from the Christmas break.

Rodgers said if the Falcons show more effort than Mackay this afternoon they’ll be wellplaced to snare a win.
