YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

WHAT WORKRELATED GOALS HAVE YOU SET FOR YOURSELF THIS YEAR?

DARREN BUCHANAN MANAGING DIRECTOR, HAYS QUEENSLAND

The work-related goal I’ve set for myself this year is to focus my attention, time and resources on the big picture and not let the smaller, less important details and disruptions occupy large amounts of my time. Given our industry’s rapid rate of change, great opportunities are there for the taking, if only we find the time to identify, embrace and maximise them. Change should not be feared, it is a natural consequence of the entrepreneurial world we live in. To maximise the opportunities it presents, we must be agile and put in place the correct framework and methodology.

SINEAD HOURIGAN BRISBANE DIRECTOR, ROBERT WALTERS

On a personal level, I will be completing the Australian Institute of Company Directors course for company directors this year, as I have been talking about it for a few years now and it’s time. For my business, we have recently refreshed our global purpose statement which is “powering people and organisations to fulfil their unique potential”. In line with this, I have set a whole-of-business goal called Connect 2000 which is a target for our office to connect 2000 people with opportunities to help them achieve their potential and I’m really excited to see how that goes across the business.

JULIE FORD SENIOR EXECUTIVE CONSULTANT, McARTHUR

There are so many but, as a priority, my key goal will be to refine my timemanagement skills. I am very organised and can get through a lot of work, however, part of time management is knowing when to say no, or to delegate tasks that are not the most important part of what I do. I strive to provide superior service levels and prefer to do most things myself, however, service levels drop when you don’t have the time to do tasks well. Time management is not just about deadlines but looking at what is achievable and how I get there with the resources available.

DR NERIDA HILLBERG DIRECTOR OF PSYCHOLOGY, FERRIS MANAGEMENT CONSULTANTS

I am keen to give back to my profession of psychology so I endeavour to establish a mentoring program for new psychologists. The transition from tertiary study to an early-career psychologist can be a daunting one. Having a mentor would have been tremendously valuable to me when I first started out. Mentoring programs have proven to be effective in yielding a range of positive outcomes. Hopefully by year’s end, I’ll have established an impactful program.
