incidents. “It will cause a lot of rainfall in the area – with this heavy rain we tend to see a lot of road accidents and flood related rescues, we have seen a few in the last 24 hours,” Sen Ops Supervisor Singh said.

“We are aiming for a fatality-free weekend – for people to be mindful of their kids and where their children are play- ing especially in flood waters and flooded creeks which can be tempting for kids. “If it is flooded, forget it.” The warning follows an emergency services rescue of a girl in Brinsmead, who was swept into waters at 12.20pm.

She clung onto a tree before rescue crews returned her to safety unharmed.

The QAS has an operations centre set up in Manunda to prepare for the worst.

“We have a roster ready to go in case people need to be called in,” Sen Ops Supervisor Singh said

“At this stage all we are expecting is rain.”

He said a number of locations were on the radar as po- tentially vulnerable.

“Mossman is always a spot; toward the Daintree and Tully – around Cairns you get areas like Freshwater Creek that go under quite quickly,” he said.

“It becomes very hard to identify where to put resources – we have to wait for the event to emerge.”
