Samba Rio loving the country life

- JORDAN GERRANS

THE country life in Gordonvale is behind Samba Rio’s form resurgence, trainer Ralph Baker thinks.

Previously in the yard of Shane Sigvart in Rockhampton and Alby Molino in Townsville, Baker believes the four-year-old is loving life at Gordonvale, leading to the gelding’s two straight wins.

Samba Rio claimed the Ratings Band 0-55 Handicap on the third of this month at Cluden Park and this afternoon steps up to the Benchmark 65 Handicap (1200m).

As a two-year-old, the gelding won on debut at Rockhampton by almost three lengths but did not greet the judges again until November of last year.

From 24 career starts, he has scored just three wins, with two coming in the last three months under the watch of Baker.

“I think horses likes living in the country, it is open with plenty of countryside, I think that has a lot to do with it,” Baker sad.

“There is only a couple of horses who work here at Gordonvale, it is quiet.

“He has to carry a low weight this start but he is well up in class, we will see how he goes.”

Veteran hoop Peter Cullen has been on board his last two starts and again takes the ride today.
