JORDAN GERRANS AFL Cairns is comfortable with South Cairns’ in-house penalties to Tristan Keilar and will not impose their own sanctions.

Cutters footballer Keilar sent a Facebook message to Clementine Ford, a best-selling author and feminist commentator, following the murder of student Aiia Maasarwe in Melbourne.

“I wish they got you not poor old Aiia,” the message from Keilar’s account to Ford reads.

The Cutters have imposed 20 hours community service to a charity that supports women and a club two-match ban in the AFL Cairns 2019 season to Keilar for his actions, which violated the AFL’s Social Media Engagement Policy.

“We are happy that the club has taken that course of action,” AFL Cairns’ football manager Craig Lees said.

“In terms of the social media and vilification policy, they have acted in accordance with those policies.

“We support the club’s sanctions and AFL Cairns will take no further action.”

Earlier this week, Keilar publicly apologised for his ac- tions, saying “I’m sorry if anyone was offended by it.”

In a media release, the South Cairns Australian football and Sporting Club acknowledged a breach of the social media policy by Keilar.

“As reported in the Cairns Post 21/1/2019, the club does not support the comments made by Tristan which were not in line with the club’s fam- ily values and respectful relationships policies,” the release said.

“Tristan is extremely apologetic of the comment that was made and has made a public media apology regarding this matter.

“Tristan will serve club sanctions which will include 20 hours community service to a charity that supports women, and a club two-match ban in the AFL Cairns 2019 season.

“The club will not be making any further comment.”

The Cutters veteran played 18 games for the Fretwell Park club in 2018.
