Mourilyan softballer stands tall at titles

-

ARUN SINGH MANN EL ARISH Strikers softball player Syren Letizia has taken her representative career to the next level with a recent trip to the Softball Australia Under-15 National Championships in Perth.

The 14-year-old from Mourilyan was selected in the Queensland Fire squad for the week-long tournament, which hosted 11 teams.

A third-base regular who also fills in at catcher and short stop, Syren said she surprised herself with her performances at the nationals.

“I thought I’d be pretty outclassed; I was playing with Brisbane girls who train a lot more than us,” she said.

“But I think we (FNQ representatives) did all right, really. “The difference (between the local competition and nationals) is all the girls are good; they were all on another level and it meant you had to step up.”

The Fire finished fifth after missing out on finals and Syren said her goal now is to return to the nationals for further selection.

“Next year, I’ll be in under-16s and that’s when they start looking at you for the Australian team,” she said.

She began her softball journey with the school-based Peninsula team in 2016 and since then has been taking to the field with the El Arish Strikers, who compete in the Softball FNQ competition.
