PRIORITY NO.1 FOR BARNES

LEGEND’S TOUR MUST-DO IN CITY

- JACK LAWRIE

ROCK legend Jimmy Barnes is looking forward to sitting down for a meal at his favourite seafood restaurant in Cairns as he returns to headline the triumphant return of Red Hot Summer.

Barnes will headline the line-up of the Red Hot Summer Tour, which was cut short before it could arrive in Cairns last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He’ll be joined by an all-star line-up of Australian rock royalty, including the Hoodoo Gurus, Jon Stevens, Vika and Linda and Chris Cheney.

Barnes has a special connection with the Far North – the famous shot of a burning cane field in the Working Class Man music video was filmed at Gordonvale.

Since then, he’s made the effort to visit the region regularly on tour, most recently on September 2019 for his Shutting Down Your Town tour.

“It’s been way too long – we’re so excited to get back up and we’re ready to rock,” he said.

Barnes said he doesn’t eat much before a big gig to avoid being flat-footed on stage, but would likely have a big lunch on the day of the show.

“I like all the seafood places down by the wharf – last time I was there, I had a great meal at Salt House,” he said.

“I think if you’re up north on the Reef, you want to have the seafood.”

The Red Hot Summer Tour will have COVID-safe measures in place to keep it going.

Promoter Duane McDonald says the return of the festival in 2021 has been a result of lot of continuous hard work.

“We were disappointed to cancel much of the 2020 tour,” he said.

“But safety was, and always is, our first priority.”

Barnes kept himself busy during the lockdown period, working on a children’s book with his wife Jane Mahoney, a cookbook, a fiction book, a new album and a rockabilly project with the Living End’s Chris Cheney.

He also kept up his live performances on Facebook, posting clips of performances with Jane, which have racked up millions of views.

The Red Hot Summer Tour kicks off on March 13.

Tickets are still on sale for the Cairns stop, which will play on May 15 at the Cairns Showgrounds.
