Yet another “Code Yellow” at Cairns Hospital (CP 07/05), and this without being swamped by COVID patients. Would Michael Healy please explain what the government he represents has done to increase its capacity? After all, the “fifteen days lockdown to flatten the curve” in March 2020 was to give governments the time to increase hospital capacity, while preventing them being overwhelmed. What progress have you made, Mr Healy?

We were told to phone the police in an emergency. Then that 40 per cent of calls aren’t answered, and if they are, the response may be “we’re too busy to respond”. Then we were sold the line Queensland’s health system was the best in the country. Now, the Premier and Health Minister tell us the system’s in crisis. Cairns has seen another “Code Yellow” day. Phone for an ambulance, only to be told the closest one is 50km away. Michael Healy talks “big shiny things” and the Premier pledges $1bn to redeveloping the Gabba. Big shiny things! How about delivering services. Rick, Redlynch
Having had the only ATM on the premises removed, I am wondering if DFO is now the only major shopping centre in Australia without an Automatic Teller Machine (ATM)?
Dear Santa, what I would like for Christmas in July is for an NRL referee to not award Josh Addo-Carr (Melbourne Storm) another try from a forward pass thrown by Justin Olam. There were three against the Rabbits. It’s an ugly blight on the game.

You have to admire the sheer determination of renewables proponents (CP 07/05). Grid-scale renewables haven’t worked anywhere, not even in Germany. South Australia has started locking home solar out of the grid as they have too much of it and it is too destabilising. Closing just two more coal-fired power plants will mean the end of reliable electricity. Is that what we want?

When large-scale renewables projects are built too far from the end users there is a significant loss of electricity from heat in the transmission lines. The new wind farm should be built along the Cairns northern beaches to prevent that loss.

Re mechanic (CP 7/05), I don’t think the fire brigade or police would agree with you. All that a gas or petrol tank needs to explode is a point of ignition, whether that is because of leakage or an accident, there will be an explosion. Stewart, Edmonton

$20m for early intervention for criminal youth? We could build a top boot camp in a remote location for that money. Tents, a cookhouse and an unclimbable fence are the main requirements.
