TAMURI’S TIME TO SHINE

- ROWAN SPARKES

CAIRNS basketball product Tamuri Wigness will return to play his first NBL game in his hometown this weekend.

The former Cairns State High School student, who trained with the Taipans for years and was a member of the NBA Global Academy, signed a two-year deal with the Bullets last year.

Wigness played just over five minutes combined in two games against the Snakes in Brisbane earlier this year, but is set to feature more prominently Saturday night at the Snag Pit.

The 19-year-old’s minutes have been on a steady increase in his debut NBL season, averaging 19 minutes in his last four outings, compared to 11 minutes across his first 14 games.

Taipans coach Mike Kelly said it had been fun watching Wigness’ growth this season.

“Tamuri’s been in Cairns Basketball forever and we loved having him here when he was here,” he said.

“He had an opportunity after the (NBA Global

Academy) with Brisbane and he took that up. We want nothing but the best for Tamuri, and anybody who comes from Cairns.”

Taipans guard Scott Machado said Wigness was destined for great things.

“He’s always been a hard worker and he plays the game very hard,” he said.

“He comes in and gives Brisbane energy every time.

“You can tell that he’s a young energetic kid that has the will to want to be better.

“If he stays in that role it’s going to be perfect for him.”
