Happy Father’s Day

SPOIL HIM WITH THESE GREAT IDEAS:

- CHRIS CALCINO

FATHER’S Day is upon us again with the poor, downtrodden dads of Cairns finally getting their moment.

Lawns will go un-mowed, six-packs will vanish before our very eyes, and bedsheets will become stained by bacon grease, egg yolk and scotch.

For those dads (read: me) whose offspring are technically too young to operate a motor vehicle, pull in a steady wage, or walk, immense responsibility will fall on the shoulders of mums this Sunday.

We get it – planning out the perfect day is tough.

That’s why the Cairns Post has compiled this handy list to help mums sort out an itinerary for the best blokes in town.

We can start off with a free frozen yoghurt waffle cone and see where the day takes us.

YOMG, 125 ABBOTT ST, CAIRNS CITY

YOMG owner Lynette Wilson has set the Father’s Day freebie bar high, with every dad eligible to get a free waffle cone from 12-3pm on Sunday.

Dads must be accompanied by their child and like YOMG Cairns on either Facebook or Instagram to score the free treat.

“We are giving away a free waffle cone to all dads on Father’s Day because we think they’re the absolute coolest dudes about,” Ms Wilson said.

“If you haven’t got anything planned for his special day, or you already have plans to enjoy our beautiful esplanade, bring him in and we can help you spoil him.”

DEAL: Free waffle cone DAD RATING: Strewth, that’s a beauty.

SKYPARK, MCGREGOR RD, SMITHFIELD

Fancy pushing dad off a cliff? Here is your chance!

Skypark is offering a buyone, get-one free deal that lets dad bungy or giant swing free with the purchase of one fullpriced activity.

Go to the Skypark website and use the promo code SUPERDAD to get the deal.

The offer is only valid on Father’s Day this Sunday. DEAL: Buy one, dad jumps free.

DAD RATING: I swear I would, but my baby is only nine months old …

CAIRNS PULLMAN INTERNATIONAL, 17 ABBOTT ST, CAIRNS

This is just ridiculous, in a good way.

Ladies love a high tea, but now the Pullman has come through with the goods for dads across Cairns.

We will let them explain the mouth-watering madness that is the Father’s Day smoke and whiskey high tea.

This is just some of what the boozy banquet includes.

Three-tiered silver stands of enhanced smoke and whiskey offerings, including sweet and savoury scones with jam and cream, house made relish and creme fraiche and whiskey buttercream cookies

The second tier of rocky road delight, raspberry-filled callebaut dark chocolate mousse with coconut rough

Beverages served with the smoke and whiskey high tea include a whiskey flight or a glass of Chandon Brut or rose, or dad’s favourite beer.

The offer runs from 11am-3pm on Sunday.

Bookings are essential and can be made by calling 4050 2112 or emailing H8772FB@accor.com.

DEAL: $55 per person, $145 for family of two adults and two children.

DAD RATING: Ram that into my guts immediately.

TRINITY BEACH VIBE FESTIVAL, VASEY ESPLANADE, TRINITY BEACH

Basically an excuse to drink, as if we needed one. This is the third time Rotary has run the Trinity Beach Vibe Festival, pegged as “the perfect event planned for all our beer-loving fathers out there”.

The lawns at the northern end of Trinity Beach will come alive with local breweries slinging beers, bands performing and an array of food.

Food and drink vendors include the Frying Dutchies, Tony’s Pizza Cairns, Mojo Street Food, Coral Coast Catering, Hemingway’s Brewery and Mr Dairy Whipp Cairns. Funds raised will go towards youth projects on the

northern beaches. Tickets are still on sale.

DEAL: Beer, food, beach, tunes.

DAD RATING: Well, colour me drunk.

SOUTH CAIRNS SPORTS CLUB, 57-59 ROBERT RD, EDMONTON

A man’s gotta eat, and all the better if there is free beer thrown in the mix.

South Cairns Sports Club will be rolling out its twocourse menu from 11.30am-2pm and 5-9pm on Sunday.

Punters get a choice between two mains – lamb rump or JD pork ribs (my personal choice) – and a dessert consisting of Belgian waffles with cookie dough ice cream, white chocolate ganache and berry compote.

Plus, all dads get a complimentary pot of beer!

Bookings are essential and can be made by visiting the website or calling 4045 2107. DEAL: $38 per person, free pot of beer for dads DAD RATING: I’ve a sudden hankerin’ for the meat sweats.

CAIRNS CENTRAL SHOPPING CENTRE

Reawaken dad’s inner child with the Double Dollars deal at the iPlay Cairns video game arcade this Sunday.

Spend $50 to get $100 credit, or spend $100 to get $200.

Terms and conditions apply – but why not poke your head in if you are already doing some shopping.

DEAL: Double dollars for arcade games.

DAD RATING: Repetitive

THE BENSON, 50 GRAFTON ST, CAIRNS

Pretty simple … $20 for a burger, chips and beer at the newest hotel in Cairns.

The limited offer runs from 11.30am-2.30pm and everyone can get the deal, not just dads.

Bookings can be made here or by calling 4046 0300.

DEAL: $20 burger, chips and beer.

DAD RATING: Daddy likey.

DUNDEE’S AT CAIRNS AQUARIUM, 5 FLORENCE ST, CAIRNS

This monstrous thing has to be seen to be believed.

Dundee’s at the Cairns Aquarium is launching its one-day-only Big Daddy Burger on Father’s Day – an absolute whopper that comes with a complimentary beer. All for $35.

For bookings visit click here or phone 4276 1855. DEAL: $35 Big Daddy Burger, chips and beer.

DAD RATING: Ready to dislocate my jaw if necessary.

GRAND HOTEL, 34 MCLEOD ST, CAIRNS

Finally, a pub has got portion sizes right.

The Grand Hotel will be rolling out its 2kg Grand Parma for $42 and the Grand Rump (more than 2kg including plate) for $49.

Both of these beauties include a palpitation-inducing serve of chips.

Weaklings can also get the “training parma” for $32, which is 1.3kg on the plate – and there is even a $10 rump for entrees.

DEAL: Big meat, good times. DAD RATING: Willing to cop heart failure for the team.

BRANSFORDS TACKLE, CAPTAIN COOK HIGHWAY/ENDEAVOUR RD, CLIFTON BEACH

If you’ve left prezzies to the last minute, this could be your saviour.

Bransfords Tackle is shutting down for about a month at the end of October for a major renovation after the building and attached service station, small supermarket and takeaway restaurant sold to a new owner.

But it will return!

In the meantime, the owners want to move $750,000 of stock to make room for the construction crews.

That means plenty of big discounts with four crab pots selling for $50, cast nets starting at $35, and gift vouchers attracting a 10 per cent bonus.

Spot lock electric motors are $150 off, all other electric outboards are 20 per cent off – plus there are plenty of deals on rods.

DEAL: Fishing gear fire sale before the big reno. DAD RATING: All the gear, still no idea.
