Anglers chase the big one

Weipa Fishing Classic reels in talent with prize pool

- MARK MURRAY

MORE than 2000 anglers have piled into Weipa for the start of one of Queensland’s biggest fishing tournaments, or what locals describe as “fishing heaven”.

Massive barra, sailfish, pitcher, grunter, king salmon, billfish and brim are all being stalked by some of Australia’s best fishermen at the annual Weipa Fishing Classic, with almost $200,000 up for grabs in several different categories.

The three days of non-stop fishing started at midnight and has a capacity field despite the global pandemic.

President Aaron Schleich said 2200 tickets were sold for the event and more than 3500 people danced the night away at the official launch on Thursday night.

“We’re out to break records and we already have, with the tickets snapped up faster than any other year,” he said.

“We are stoked. We’re in for a big few days fishing.”

Weipa Tackle World manager Nathan White – a major sponsor of the event – said the classic was part of the fabric of the Far North mining town.

“Without Covid, fishermen come from all over Australia for this, so it’s a big deal for all the local businesses,” he said.

The classic is normally held in June every year but was moved to Father’s Day weekend.

The aim of the game is to catch the “biggest and heaviest fish” with daily weigh-ins held every afternoon.

There are also catch-andrelease categories.

Mr Schleich said more than $190,000 in cash and prizes was on the line this year.

“That’s another record for us,” he said.

“It’s a bit windy out here so conditions aren't perfect but there’s plenty of fish getting caught.”

Weipa’s Andoom Oval has turned into a hive of activity with events until Sunday.

“It’s such a family-friendly vibe and the whole town gets behind it,” Mr White said.
