Search starts for new CEO

THE search is on for a new Douglas Shire Council boss after the shock resignation of Mark Stoermer.

Mr Stoermer’s decision to leave the chief executive post after three years in the role caught many by surprise, but he said it was the right time “for a fresh pair of eyes” to take up the Mossman-based post.

He joined the council in 2018 after a short stint as the Nillumbik Shire’s leader, saying he had thoroughly enjoyed his time in the Far North job.

“The past three years has been a fascinating journey and I am really grateful to have met some amazing people in Douglas Shire,” he said.

“Upon the completion of this termed contract, I have decided that now is the right time for me to move on to the next chapter of my life.”

Mr Stoermer, who lives in Palm Cove, has been replaced by governance manager Juanita Warner as acting CEO until the position is filled.

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said they were already advertising the important role and would cast the net wide.

He said Mr Stoermer’s tenure had been made more difficult with the onset of the global pandemic.

“I personally have really enjoyed working with Mark who was a great asset to me as a new mayor while we worked through some very challenging times brought about by Covid as well as the day-to-day operations of the organisation,” he said. “On behalf of councillors and staff, I would like to thank Mark for his commitment to his work, his team and the local community, and wish him the very best in his future endeavours.”

Mr Stoermer is one of several changes to the Far North council’s administration this year.
