Festival preps for a Taste

- MARK MURRAY

AUSTRALIA’S best chefs, hawker-style food and one of the most alluring beachside destinations anywhere in the world will soon welcome punters at a sexy new Far North food fiesta.

The Harry Hawker Street Food Party will take over the Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort at a free event next month as part of the exciting return of foodie favourite Taste Port Douglas.

The festival has roared back to life and plans to turn one of the country’s best resorts – with its swaying palms, magical pools and views of glistening Four Mile Beach – into a vibrant melting pot of culinary curiosity.

The Sheraton will be full of swagger over three days as the bustling village hub of the festival, which will include pop-up bars, live music and cooking demonstrations from celebrity chefs including festival founder Spencer Patrick.

Sheraton general manager Steve Molnar said the resort was the perfect base for the event. “(We’re) excited to be a part of bringing people together once again to celebrate food and drink with the strong local support of businesses, tourism bodies and the community,” he said.

“We look forward to welcoming some of Australia’s leading chefs to join the many talented Port Douglas chefs here in tropical North Queensland.”

Tourism Tropical North Queensland chief executive Mark Olsen said Taste Port Douglas would help raise the profile of the region’s food and beverage offering while enticing southerners north for a holiday, when they can travel.

The free street food party will be on Saturday, October 9, with the full festival running from October 7-10

A long lunch featuring four top local restaurants Salsa, Sassi, Zinc and Harrisons is also in the works.
