New look for Lakes
A HIGHLY valued yet dormant Cassowary Coast community asset is set for a new lease of life after the council unveiled a draft strategic master plan.
The draft Warrina Lakes strategic master plan has been finalised and CCRC is requesting community feedback through a consultation process, as the local government aims to “grow the awareness and use of Warrina
Lakes by making it a more inviting and interesting place to visit”.
The draft plan looks to maintain some historic features, while also listing new attractions in underused areas of the park.
One of the major changes the draft plan recommended was renaming the site to Warrina Lakes Community Parklands “to reflect the current future usage of the site”.
Among the key initiatives listed was developing an adventure playground for children, a BMX pump track, developing a series of boardwalks and bird hides to increase bird watching and environmental appreciation, and building a feature bridge across the lakes designed to be a key point for photo opportunities and weddings.
The plan also noted creating a small multi-sports/festival centre with a shade tree defined oval that could be used for various casual sporting and cultural events such as moonlight cinema, festivals and performances, and developing an orchid house and fernery to display orchids, ferns, tropical foliage plants and house plants.
Mayor Mark Nolan said Warrina Lakes was an important community asset from both a recreational and cultural perspective.
“Council has identified the need to raise the profile and patronage of the Warrina Lakes community by providing various improvements whilst also maintaining a number of existing attractions and facilities, such as the historic covered shed, mini rail, Anzac Ave and the Mamu Bush Tucker Garden,” he said.
The public consultation stage will be open until November 21. Have your say through the consultation portal at warrinastrategic.cassowarycoast.qld.gov.au or by emailing the project team: enquiries@cassowarycoast.qld.gov.au.
