Sustainability means the world to tour group

Small World Journeys – Sustainability/ Environment Excellence award (sponsored by RDA Tropical North)

SUSTAINABILITY has always been the ethos behind Small World Journeys which provides educational tours for school students, so that made winning the BEX Sustainability/ Environment Excellence award extra sweet.

The business, which started in 2008, includes a team of educators, guides and tourism experts who provide tours, accommodation, meals, transport and activities for its participants.

The award, sponsored by Regional Development Australia Tropical North, recognises a business or organisation that is working to reduce the impact of its operations on the environment and/or provides products and services that have positive environmental outcomes.

“It feels great to win especially in a year that’s been so tough for tourism,” owner Laurie Pritchard said. “Sustainability is something we think about all the time even when there’s not much business.”

Ms Pritchard says just preparing a nomination into the BEX awards helps businesses.

“I think the awards process allows you to look at your business more carefully, and you can see where the holes are in the business,” she said. “I think it makes every business better whether they win or not as it forces people to closely examine their business.”
