COMMUNITY GARDEN SET TO BLOOM

- ALISON PATERSON

A COMMUNITY garden in Cairns is preparing to grow with new members keen to dig in.

At Bungalow Community Garden, president Neryl Smith said the space was set to more than double, allowing more room for garden beds, composting, bees and their nursery.

“We have more than 70 members at the moment and while most are in their 60s, we have started a Saturday group with younger people,” he said.

“And we are about to more than double our current space of 60sqm as we are on railway land and have a licence to expand.

“This is really good as we had to turn people away before and now we can attract more members.”

Mr Smith, 65, said as one of eight community gardens in Cairns, the Bungalow Community Garden is lovingly cared for by its members.

“It’s been called the best community garden by many people who have been in community gardens down south,” Mr Smith said.

“Bungalow Community Garden is fantastic because of the people involved.”
