Ex-NRL prop in stoush with police

- CYDONEE MARDON

FORMER NRL star Brent Kite has been involved in a tense standoff with police, with officers smashing his car window after he allegedly refused to wind it down.

Police will allege the former Manly, St George and Penrith prop ignored their repeated requests to hand over his licence and submit to a random breath test, all the while keeping his window closed, after they stopped him on Wednesday afternoon in Queanbeyan. Officers spoke to him for more than 15 minutes then smashed the window to gain entry to the vehicle.

Police will allege Kite was driving a car in Lowe St about 4.30pm when a number plate check revealed the car was unregistered.

“The driver refused to stop and instead continued into a unit complex driveway,” a police source said. “Police approached the car and requested the driver produce a licence but he refused to wind down the window. The officers smashed in the window.”

Kite’s licence was found in the car’s console. A blood and alcohol test returned a negative result.

He was arrested and taken to Queanbeyan Police Station where he was charged with not producing a driver’s licence and driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle. Kite was released on bail to appear at Queanbeyan Local Court later this month.
