McCandless was an adventurer who sought an increasing­ly nomadic lifestyle. His travels led him to the Alaskan wilderness, where he died. His official cause of death was starvation, but this has been debated for some years. McCandless was the subject of the book Into the Wild, which was made into a feature film.
