Trade hub build now under way
A NATIONAL construction heavy hitter has begun building a long-awaited multimilliondollar export hub in Cairns.
Construction firm Hansen Yuncken has turned the first sod at the trade and distribution centre being built at the Cairns Airport.
Deputy Premier and Queensland Development Minister Steven Miles was on hand to announce the tender, with Air Freight Handling Services to oversee the development of the project and handling operations once complete.
Mr Miles said the centre would give Far North growers improved access to major markets, “especially throughout Asia”.
State Treasurer and Trade Minister Cameron Dick, who was also on site for the announcement, said the early works would create 30 construction jobs.
A further 30 will be supported once the facility is operational, including nine new roles.
Hansen Yuncken will start construction immediately, with the build expected to take nine months.
