How to be top tent hit

- YASHEE SHARMA

POP-UP tents, water bottles and coolers are among the must-have items for festival-goers in the lead-up to the outdoor party season, according to Far North camping retailers.

With highly anticipated music events like Savannah in the Round planned for the second half of the year, outdoor stores are preparing for a boost in sales.

Store manager of Tentworld at the Cairns Showgrounds Shopping Centre, Kye Mares, said it was best to focus on light and easy gear for festival-style camping.

“I recommend the smaller-style pop-up tents, they’re light and easy to pack and put up,” Mr Mares said.

“Water bottles, definitely, and Yeti coolers are also festival camping necessities, they last from eight to 12 hours.”

Mr Mares said he was expecting business to pick up in the middle of the year when Far North residents prepared for festival season.

Performers and audiences alike have now emerged from restrictions and lockdowns and will make their appearance at the camping festival, Savannah

in the Round, later in the year.

The event will take place at Mareeba Rodeo Arena on Friday, September 30 to Sunday, October 2 with a special Early Bird Campers’ Concert on Thursday, September 29 for season ticket-buyers only.

An event spokesman said they expected 6000 unique guests that translated to 21,000 through the gates over three days and four nights.

“(Ticket sales) are well ahead of where we were this time last year which is fantastic for a year-two event,” the spokesman said.

Adam Brand has joined the Savannah stage and said the festival had carved itself out to be one of the top 10 in Australia.

“Get there early before the gates open and be the last to leave,” he said.

The Waifs’ Vikki Thorn also confirmed the band’s appearance and said the festival had brought joy and revelry in the escape from the pandemic.

“Part of the whole (festival) experience is getting dusty and dirty with no sleep and running through the crowds,” she said.

“Sounds amazing, doesn’t it?” Tickets can be purchased online at www.savannahintheround.com.au.
