HELMETS SAVE LIVES

-

I HAVE noticed in recent weeks that more and more cyclists are not wearing helmets. That includes a parent cycling with a child, neither of whom were wearing helmets.

A note to the people who put helmets on and don’t do the straps up, you aren’t fooling anyone.

I know a lot of people who do this take the view they can do what they like because it is their body. However, the people who clean up the mess would not share that viewpoint.

Maybe the Cairns Post could fill up a double-page spread on what happens to a person after they are hit by a car. You could include the nature of the injuries, some permanent, as well as the impact on emergency responders and family members. In some cases there are ongoing and long-term medical expenses for the cyclist.

While you are at it, perhaps a two-page spread covering the nature of injuries passengers in cars sustain, when they have their feet up on the dashboard and the airbags deploy in an accident. Seatbelts are no protection in that scenario. Some pictures and diagrams could be helpful. Linda Farnes, Whitfield
