Charges on alleged graffiti

- ARUN SINGH MANN

VANDALS allegedly responsible for a senseless graffiti attack on the Cairns City Library have been charged by police.

Police will allege two male teenagers attended the library between the hours of 1am and 6am on Wednesday where, it will be alleged, they were seen damaging two buildings using black markers.

On Thursday, police arrested and charged the boys with wilful damage.

A 14-yearold Mooroobool boy will be dealt with under the Youth Justice Act and a 13year-old Mooroobool boy will appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court at a later date.

The act disgusted regular users, who were in disbelief that anyone would target the building, while former Magistrate Pat O’Shane suggested the punishment must fit the crime and those responsible scrub the graffiti off with a toothbrush.

However, Cairns Regional Council was quick to act and by noon it was painted over, at a cost of $2500 to the ratepayer.
