- BRONWYN FARR

MORE than 3000 people are expected to attend the threeday Mount Garnet rodeo and races on the May Day long weekend.

Mount Garnet Rodeo committee secretary Nicole Butler said the rodeo would be held on May 1 but festivities would start on April 28 with a barbecue ahead of race days on April 29 and 30, while on May 2 a recovery breakfast would be held at the golf club.

The committee has launched the inaugural Mount Garnet Rodeo Queen Quest and entrant Kianna Darcey, 24, from Herberton said she was thrilled to have the chance to get involved.

“I have been going to Mount Garnet rodeo since I can remember, with the whole family every year. I am really fond of the event and this is a great way for young women to get involved with the rodeo association and community as well,” Ms Darcey said.

“Rodeo is so exciting and thrilling – courageous men and women get on a bucking bull or gallop around a barrel; it is an authentic thing, they are doing what they love and are passionate about.”

Ms Butler said a volunteer group was hard at work on upgrades to facilities.
