Show of unity at court

- MATTHEW NEWTON

THE family of a teenager killed during a party in Manoora congregated outside the Cairns Courthouse on Friday morning in a show of unity, as his alleged murderer had his charge mentioned in the Cairns Children’s Court.

Wearing T-shirts printed with an image of Jayden Dau’s face and the writing “Forever 17”, the family of the slain teenager said they were there seeking justice for their boy.

Far North detectives charged a 14-year-old Edmonton boy with murder on New Year’s Day after an incident at a Manoora street party.

Jayden, 17, was rushed to hospital but died in the early hours of New Year’s Day 2022 after allegedly being stabbed in the abdomen.

The 14-year-old had his matters mentioned in children’s court on Friday, March 18.

The Cairns Post applied for permission to be present during Friday’s proceedings, but was knocked back by Magistrate Sandra Pearson.

The mention of the matter on Friday was a purely administrative proceeding.

Jayden was previously remembered by his heartbroken family as a “handsome young man” who had the world at his feet.
