BROTHER: ‘HE WAS JUST REALLY GOOD COMPANY’

- SARAH CARROLL sarah.carroll@news.com.au

THE VICTIM of a fatal crash between a utility and a semi-trailer on the Kennedy Highway on Monday afternoon has been remembered by his family as a “kind and quiet kind of bloke who was really good company”.

Steve Ohl, 67, died on Monday, leaving behind four children and his 12 siblings, including younger brother and Cairns resident Lindsay.

Lindsay Ohl remembered his older brother as his partner in crime, saying they “were attached at the hip” and “did everything together”.

“Like all families, we were closer to some than others, but I was born right after Steve so I thought of him more as my twin,” Mr Ohl said.

“He was a kind and quiet kind of bloke who would give you his last sixpence if he thought you needed it.

“I’ve never felt so bad in my life”.

Steve enjoyed the FNQ lifestyle, fitting right in after moving up from Rockhampton five years ago.

“He loved camping, fishing and a couple beers in the evening,” Mr Ohl said.

“He was very outdoorsy and loved living with nature, he was just really good company too.

“Steve did a little bit of travelling around but mostly kept to himself. Even still, he made some very good friends up here.”

Speaking on behalf of the family, Mr Ohl sent best wishes to the truck driver involved in the crash and thanked emergency services.

“Our hearts go out to him, he had no part to blame in this and we hope he recovers well,” he said. “Thank you to the emergency services that assisted on the day, especially the young officer up at Kuranda Police.”
