Shaving head to honour Pop

-

A 15-YEAR-OLD girl who had a special bond with her grandfather will shave her head on Saturday in memory of him to raise funds for brain cancer.

Rosie Avery, of Manunda, lost her grandfather, Gregory Molyneux, last year and is aiming to raise funds for the Mark Hughes Foundation.

“I am shaving my head; last year in August I watched my Pop die from brain cancer,” Rosie said.

“Before he passed away I promised him I would raise money to help him find a cure.

“He was diagnosed five years before he passed away. He was suffering for quite a while and didn’t get the full life quality in the past five years.”

Rosie felt her grandfather was like a second father to her, and she grew closer to him when they lived together for 18 months.

“We were close, he was my rock. I didn’t have most of my family growing up, he was my rock and soul,” she said.

“No matter what, I always felt accepted by him, he was someone I think lots of people need.”

Rosie said her motivation behind raising the money was all the memories she had of her grandfather.

“He was very cheeky. “He had this beautiful, funny character.

“He was always happy and laughing.”

Rosie moved to Cairns from Coffs Harbour last year but plans to stream the shaving of her head live with some of her family who still live there.

“I will be doing it on Saturday afternoon. I will be doing it at the Lagoon and my mum will be shaving hair,” she said.

Shaving her head was very important to Rosie as she is invested in the work the Mark Hughes Foundation does.

“It’s so important. I really hope that they can find a cure,” she said.

“They are trying everything to find ways to cure brain cancer and, honestly, they are doing amazing (work). They are doing everything they can.

“I am appreciative for every dollar we make.”

Rosie’s journey is being documented on her Facebook page, Promise for a Cure.
