CULTURAL FESTIVAL WILL BE TO THAI FOR

- ANDREAS NICOLA

THE Cairns Thai community will share its cultural traditions on Saturday with lots of food and performances to mark an important event.

The Songkran Festival is to celebrate Thai New Year 2022 and event co-ordinator Prapasiri Techo said there would be a range of traditional dances and fashion shows.

“We will have our Buddhist ceremony in the morning and then after that there will be plenty of performances,” she said.

The festival will feature Thai cultural dancing, but it will also include celebrations from other cultures including Filipino, Japanese and Arakanese dancing.

“We would like everyone to come and join us, we are hoping people around Cairns will come and see our traditions and have fun with us,” she said.

“We won’t have an empty stage, we will run performances all day so it’s going to be very exciting and interesting.”

After the dancing there will be a Thai costume fashion show, then the Miss Songkran Contest.

Ms Techo said it was important to keep these events going.

“To keep the culture alive for the next generation. We have to keep it alive otherwise they will not know what to do for the future,” she said.

The Songkran Festival will begin at 11am on the Western Lawn at the Cairns Esplanade and go through until 9pm.

It is a free event.
