ATHLETES SET TO ROLL WITH THE PUNCHES

- ARUN SINGH MANN

A FAR North boxing club is promising an entertaining night cheaper than “a coffee and scone” as up to 30 fighters prepare for an annual event.

The Babinda Boxing Club will host its annual tournament on April 23 at the town’s RSL Memorial Hall, with lead trainer Eric Norman expecting about 15 amateur fights on the night.

While Mr Norman will be weighing in six local boxers, he said the event would feature talent from across the Far North including Cairns, Weipa and Thursday Island.

The main junior event of the night is set to feature Innisfail’s Kevin Simpson, 15, who will take on a boxer from Palm Island.

“Kevin’s had about 15 fights now and last year he won the state title,” Mr Norman said.

“It’ll be a good fight. We’re expecting a crowd of up to 300, so the atmosphere in the hall is great, it’s lively, it makes for a great night out.”

Mr Norman said while tickets would be available at the door, corporate tables for 10 guests could be pre-booked by calling 0400 596 625.
