$10m to upgrade top track

- MARK MURRAY

MORE than $10m has been spent on improving the famous Bloomfield Track, regarded as one of the best four-wheeldrive trails in the country.

Douglas Shire Council Mayor Michael Kerr said major works at the Donovan Range, Zig Zag Rd and the Cape Tribulation-Bloomfield Rd would ensure a safer driving experience for the estimated 25 vehicles a day that traverse the track during peak season.

The three projects, which involve earthworks, stormwater drainage and rigid pavement construction upgrades, cost $3.9m, $3.297m and $3.495m respectively.

Cr Kerr said improving road access for Wujal Wujal and Degarra residents was an important motivation behind the investment.

“These upgrades will reduce the need for yearly repairs during the wet season and improve drainage at a number of spots,” he said.

“People driving north of Cape Tribulation these school holidays will notice a smoother journey at some of these spots.”
