CLUTCH CAYLA TAKES BOOMERS TO FINAL

-

CAIRNS Dolphins star and adopted Far North local Cayla George will be out to lead her Melbourne Boomers to glory in the WNBL grand final just days after a clutch game two performance.

Just as it looked like Perth Lynx would seal the title, after dominating game one in a 98-71 win, George and Lindsay Allen stepped up to orchestrate one of the great grand final wins.

Opals centre George finished with a 22-point and 13rebound double-double, while Allen had 29 points, 7 rebound and six assists in Wednesday’s dramatic game two 76-75 win.

George was almost speechless following the dramatic end to the game, during which the lead changed 13 times and a missed free throw from Perth’s

Marina Mabrey, her only miss from the stripe on the night, with no time left on the clock.

“I’m really excited, the job’s not done at all,” said Boomer captain George.

“I don’t know what to say, for the first time in my life.

“I’ve wanted to change the narrative from game one so to get the chance to do that feels really good,” George said.

“We did a great job rectifying our defence, but we know the job’s not done yet.

“(Allen) is phenomenal, she’s one of the best point guards I have ever played with.

“We have played together for three seasons and not only is she a great player, but she is also a fantastic person.”

George and Boomers teammate Penina Davidson will suit up for the Dolphins when the NBL1 North season tips off, but for now, the focus is on delivering Melbourne its first premiership since 2010.

The Boomers are coached by Guy Molloy, who coached the Taipans from 2001 to 2005.

The deciding game of the WNBL grand final series tips off at 5pm. Watch the game live on Kayo Sports.
