NQ’s first fashion week is calling for applications from people of all backgrounds and experience for an event looking to rival Australia’s major cities. Jade Turnbull, owner of Platinum Model Management, said she realised Cairns had never done anything similar to a fashion week and that this would be a first.

“We saw a gap in the market,” Ms Turnbull said.

The week is looking to start on April 26, 2023, with callouts now open for models, hair and makeup technicians and designers to apply to be involved.

“We’ve already received 450 applications from different areas of the industry and it’s not just local, it’s national too,” she said.

Ms Turnbull’s agency is accepting applications from everyone and anyone of all different experience levels and backgrounds.

“We’re leaving it open; we’re being diverse,” she said.

The event will have its major show on April 29, 2023, with a focus on the North and South showcasing the light fabrics and feel for the north with a heavier and a moodier vibe for the south.

“It’s pretty much fashion that hasn’t been seen before on a runway,” Ms Turnbull said. “We are also doing a large-scale kids show.” With a vision to grow this into an annual event that rivals fashion weeks from all over the country, Ms Turnbull said she hoped to boost tourism and put Cairns on the map for fashion.

“It’s not just an event, it’s a destination,” she said.

“It’s more than that, we’re creating a network and community.”

Platinum Model Management is busy confirming a venue that will fit the hundreds expected to attend with tickets to be announced in the months coming up to the fashion week next year.

Ms Turnbull hoped it would be a sellout event. Applications for models, hair and makeup, designers and sponsors are open and accepted at www.cairnsfashionweek.com.
