ABI’S POWERFUL SONG TAKES OUT LENNON AWARD

- ANDREAS NICOLA

A CAIRNS singer has topped the genre of rock in an international songwriting competition.

Abi Muir has won the 2021 Lennon Rock Award for her song Stockholm and has progressed to the next stage of 2021 Song of the Year where she could win $20,000.

The competition was created in 1997 to honour John Lennon and give song writers the opportunity to express themselves.

“I am so happy when my music gets recognised,” Muir said.

“It’s a good feeling when people see what I do.”

Muir has just finished high school and intends to pursue music full time.

Her song is in stark contrast to what she has done in the past.

“Everything else I’ve done so far is pop,” she said.

“I want to do more rock pop and some rock indie.

“The song pretty quickly became about abuse and neglect, and knowing you’re in a bad position but finding comfort in that it’s been that way for so long that you feel safer to stay there than fight it.”
