Life is a Carnivale for rocker Camilleri

- MARK MURRAY

AUSSIE rock legend Joe Camilleri will headline over three weeks of live acts in Port Douglas as momentum builds towards its Carnivale weekend.

Famed singer-songwriter Camilleri, who has produced more than 25 records in a career nudging 50 years, will bring his Black Sorrows band to the seaside village to perform inside the Wonderland Spiegeltent, which kicked off a huge run of shows on Friday with comedian Akmal Saleh.

Wonderland Spiegeltent festival director Melissa Head said the timing of Camilleri’s east coast tour coincided perfectly with the Port Douglas Carnivale, with the icon set to play festival Sunday on May 22.

“He was on tour in Townsville and it just worked out perfectly to get them in,” she said.

“He is so much fun, it will be a great show.

“It’s going to be a terrific season for Port Douglas.”

Ms Head said the prospect of packed live events free of restrictive Covid measures meant the program was shaping as the biggest since before the pandemic.

“It’s so exciting to have fullscale events back after what we have all been through,” she said.

“And to kick off with such a bumper line-up, it’s terrific. The place is busy, it is chock-ablock full with people.”

Accompanying the entertainment program, which runs from May 6-22, will be a licensed Sunset Bar, showcasing locally produced food and the award-winning Devils Thumb Gin cocktails.

A food truck and an openair stage with free and ticketed entertainment will be located at Dixie Park.
