HEY BUDDY, YOU GOT A LIGHT?

- MELISSA HONG

ART lovers are being invited to step into the light in an Australian-first immersive installation.

The Frankston South Side Festival has transformed an underground car park into a sprawling series of light-based installations that will surround participants with as many as 1000 lights, interactive video screens, a wind tunnel and a pulsating soundscape.

The installation, which has taken over Frankston Art Centre’s park, has been assembled by lighting and production design house Mandylights. Managing director Richard Neville said the festival provided an opportunity to do something completely different, energetic and “quite in your face”.

Their work, called The Frankston Generator, explores the idea of power generation and energy transfers by making participants feel like they are in the “belly of a huge power generator underground”.

“We like to do things with a bit of meaning,” Mr Neville said.

Mandylights has provided light work shows for international acts 5 Seconds of Summer, the Backstreet Boys, Pnau and Ricky Martin as well as festivals such as Vivid Sydney.

The festival runs until May 15 in and around Frankston.
