CUB NAME A TRIBUTE TO FAMILY

- RACHAEL ROSEL

A FORMER Brisbane Lions star who tragically lost his brother last year has honoured him when welcoming his first cub to the family.

Archie Smith and his wife Sophie were sure they wanted to keep his brother Sebastian’s memory alive after he died from suicide in 2021, and when their son Montgomery was born on April 29, it was a no-brainer.

“We were initially going to name him Sebastian as his first name, but I felt in a way it was replacing him. So we decided to go with his middle name,” Smith said.

“They can share that name and I can teach him about his uncle when he grows up.”

When Monty was first born, the first-time dad said he experienced every emotion “all rolled into one”.

“Given the tumultuous ride I’ve had with retiring and mainly the death of my brother, I was at a point where I was wondering if I would reach that level of happiness again … and he’s (Monty) done that,” he said.

After spending eight years in the professional AFL world, Smith said he was more than happy to head into the world outside football where he could finally settle into life with his wife and new son.
