IT’S PARTY TIME AT CARNIVALE

- MARK MURRAY

THE biggest Port Douglas Carnivale crowd in years is expected this weekend for the town’s largest annual event.

The three-day extravaganza kicked off on Friday with the Longest Lunch before the running of the wildly popular Macrossan St parade last night.

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said the excitement was palpable in the town, with Dixie Park transformed into a colourful festival hub with rides and activities for kids.

“This event is always huge for our region, as locals and visitors get a chance to celebrate our unique lifestyle and stunning tropical region,” he said.

Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the impact of Covid had provided “incredible challenges” to the annual party but he applauded organisers for the packed program.

“Carnivale (is) a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in Port Douglas’s local culture and community, and hopefully explore some of the superb tourism experiences on offer here,” he said.

A Family Beach Day will be held on Saturday, and a Seafood Extravaganza at the Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina on Sunday.
