Nitro opens world of opportunity

- BY DEAN LAWSON

Arare Wimmera production of one of the world’s largest action arena events has prompted Horsham Mayor Pam Clarke to encourage people to spend Easter in the region.

Cr Clarke said a presentation by touring daredevil show Nitro Circus Live at Horsham City Oval on April 16 was a one-off opportunity for people to experience a unique and extravagant international act without the burden of excess travelling.

She said the Nitro Circus show, expected to attract between 8000 and 10,000 patrons to watch athletes perform death-defying stunts, represented the cream on top of a region blossoming with potential Easter experiences. “The message is: Get your tickets now. To get his type of act coming to Horsham is a huge coup,” he said.

“We simply don’t get these types of international events coming to western Victoria, let alone Horsham.

“Easter in the Wimmera is already huge with events such as the Stawell Gift and fantastic natural attractions such as our lakes and waterways, which are providing great outdoor experiences.

“But this is going to be something special and reflects an evolutionary desire to establish Horsham district as the major-events capital of western Victoria. Importantly, people don’t have to leave the region to have an Easter break.”

Idea now reality

Cr Clarke said promotors’ decision to bring the Nitro Circus Regional Rampage to Horsham was an indication the concept of Horsham being the place to visit for major events was shifting from being an idea to a reality.

“What’s wonderful about this is that it is something completely out of the ordinary for us – it is action and adventure on a grand scale and there is no doubt it will put Horsham on the map for a vastly different audience than usual,” she said.

“We’re fully primed for the expected big crowd to display the potential of – not just Horsham but also the region – through a significant international showcase.”

Cr Clarke said winning major events for Horsham was more than simply providing entertainment for people.

“It’s not just good for entertainment value – it’s critical for social and economic growth,” she said. “We’re ticking all sorts of boxes. “We now just need people to make sure they support it and continue sending a powerful message that we are open for business.”

Travis Pastrana’s Nitro Circus Live features more than 30 of the world’s leading extreme-sport athletes performing fully choreographed stunts involving freestyle motocycles, BMX, skateboards and other contraptions.

An event called the Nitro World Games last year created more than 60 world-first stunts and promotors have predicted that athletes will perform the majority of them in Horsham.

Production officials reported a steady flow of ticket sales and expect interest to intensify in the countdown to the event.

Each of the Nitro Circus Live shows is a major engineering as well as performance production.

Teams will transform Horsham City Oval into an extreme-sport arena for the event.

The event came to the Wimmera on the back of Horsham preparations for World Junior Motocross Championships next year.

International media organisations at the world junior titles will broadcast the action at Horsham’s Dooen motorcycle circuit around the world.
