Exciting start to season

-

Aseason-opening five-set win to Rhubarb Blue set the tone for another exciting Volleyball Horsham A Grade competition.

Taking on last season’s premier team the Malakos Nuggets, Rhubarb Blue came from a two-setsto-one deficit to claw back into the contest and take it deep into the fifth set.

Young tyro Jack Exell was the difference between the two teams at the back end of the game, hitting plenty of winners against a tiring Nuggets defence.

In the second game of the night Phantoms recorded a strong win over the Volleyroos.

Missing key players in Nathan Berry and Paddy Sherry, Phantoms’ young guns Aidan O’connor and Will Brennan received great service from setter Tim Popple. Both youngsters made it difficult for the Volleyroos defence.

In B Grade the young Saints, playing at the level for the first time, overcame the veterans of Waterhammers to win two sets to one.

Zac O’brien and Sam Cameron stepped up for Saints while evergreen Andrew Wundke was the Waterhammers’ best.

In other games Von Steiger Shadows and Phantom Masters recorded straight-sets wins.

Club leaders were overwhelmed with support for the camp, with 40 boys and 20 girls taking part.

Volleyball Horsham athletes were to the fore, with Matthew Berry, Cam Robinson, Nick Adamson, Tim Popple, Jack Hannan, Nathan Berry, Aaron Evans, Nathan Murphy, Will Brennan, Alan Jorgensen, Aidan O’connor, Will Saligari, Jess Radford, Laelah Robertson, Eadie Garth-lindsay and Chloe Brown all showing good form.

The athletes will now turn their attention to Warrnambool in early March before the state league season begins on March 25.
