Junior Hornets win at Naracoorte

-

Horsham Hornets’ under-16 girls enjoyed a stellar campaign at a Naracoorte junior tournament at the weekend, remaining undefeated on their way to winning a division one title.

The Hornets defeated the home side in the grand final, triumphing by a convincing 21-point margin, 37-16.

Tony Sleep said Naracoorte enjoyed a competitive first half, taking a one-point lead into the main break, but the Horsham outfit stepped up in the third term.

“The Hornets girls produced a defensive effort that has become their trademark in second halves, not allowing Naracoorte to score while piling on 20 points themselves,” he said.

“The girls’ defensive efforts were miserly for opposing teams throughout the tournament – they only allowed 12 second-half points for the entire four games.

“Congratulations to the girls and coaches Damien Kilpatrick and Sally Bryan.”

Horsham Amateur Basketball Association’s under-12 boys team also enjoyed some success at the tournament, winning three of five games.

Sleep coached the team, which finished third overall.

“They were in every game, only losing by two points to Portland on Saturday and six points to Bordertown in the semi-finals,” he said.

“The highlight for the lads was two very exciting games against Mt Gambier, which resulted in an overtime win by a point on Saturday night and a two-point victory in their consolation final on Sunday.

“Given that this is a largely bottom-age team featuring one under-10 player, the boys should be very proud of their efforts and looking forward to next season.”

The association will send four teams to a tournament at Colac at the weekend.
