Carp in the Murray, but good catches

-

Horsham Angling Club members travelled to the Murray River at the weekend and were confronted with a mass of carp.

Anglers caught a lot of these noxious fish, but there were also some good target species.

Gary Anson won the competition’s open section with a 2.43-kilogram Murray cod.

Yellowbelly catches took out other major placings, with Greg Anson first in a senior section with a 1.740kg fish from Stacey Greig, 1.546kg, Kevin Budde, 1.252kg, and Rod Parish, 1.240kg.

Jayke Greig won a junior section with a 1.278kg yellowbelly from Trent Sheills 0.682kg.

The event featured 24 adults and five juniors.

Stawell and District Angling Club members have also been busy and will host another competition this weekend at Lake Fyans.

The contest starts at 7am on Saturday and finishes at noon on Sunday, with weigh-in at 12.15pm.

The Stawell crew travelled to Portland for a taste of blue-water action and Rodney Wright, with 17 fish weighing 12.106kg, won the event from Doug Collins who bagged 15 fish at 10.677kg.

Snow Perry was third with 10 fish at 6.049kg and the junior winner was Wyatt Blake with nine fish at 5.088kg.

Rodney Wright had the heaviest fish, a 1.855kg salmon. The contest featured 11 seniors and one junior who weighed in a total of 89 fish.

Fishing action across the Wimmera and Mallee continues to be busy. Walkers Lake, designated St Arnaud district recreation water supplied by pipeline water, has been producing great hauls of redfin. The lake had been closed earlier in the year after a bloom of blue-green algae, but authorities declared the all-clear a few weeks ago.

People are also still catching yabbies from Green Lake near Horsham.
